Car Battery Trickle Charger
You want to store your car, or RV, but you know that when you go to start your vehicle after it’s been sitting for a few weeks or months, that your battery will be dead.
The car battery trickle charger is specifically designed for the maintenance of 12 Volt batteries that are used periodically or kept in storage for extended periods.
The normal self-discharge of a battery is prevented when using a car battery trickle charger. In addition, the life of rechargeable 12 volt batteries is extended by providing a minimum current, regulated output.
Low quality chargers will produce a strong, rapid charge that often will decay electrodes and boil out liquids. We strongly recommend purchasing a charger that; once your battery has been fully charged, it will automatically shut-off and then resume charging as your battery level drops. Also, check to make sure the charger you buy is specifically designed for longterm use. You want to be able to safely leave it connected to your battery for days, weeks, months, even years!
More important tips for vehicle storage:
Gas up
Air carries moisture with it and that will result in condensation in the tank. To reduce this as much as possible make sure the tank is as full as it can be. This will reduce the condensation and considerably lessen the amount of water in the gas and the injection system. Get a gasoline stabilizer such as Stabil and put this in before filling the tank. You will need to run the engine for a while to ensure that the stabilized gas has penetrated the entire injection system.
Change the oil filter and the oil
The contaminants in old oil will corrode the insides of your engine so it’s important to put fresh oil and a new filter in the car.
Over-inflate Tires
Inflate automobile tire to approximately 40 or 45 psi. Modern radial tires aren’t known to have problems with flat spotting from storage. Still, some people suggest that you roll the car a little every 2 weeks or so. It is strongly recommended that you don’t jack the vehicle up and rotate the tires because when you lower the car the suspension will be loaded up. Try and check the pressure of the tires every few weeks or so and watch for slow leaks.
Some say that the suspension will sag by putting the car up on jacks. Letting it sit on the ground for the few months shouldn’t lead to any problems.
Clean the vehicles interior
When it comes time to take your vehicle out of storage you won’t clean it. You may not want to clean it before you put it in storage but when you take it out you simply won’t do it. So, take some time and get everything really clean. Clean the carpets. Clean the glass, inside and out. Clean behind the pedal cluster. Clean and condition the leather. You’ll be surprised at the dirt you’ll find. Clean all the nooks and crannies. Also, don’t forget to also clean the trunk, etc. There is a full season of dirt and junk in the vehicle that you’re not going to want to carry into the next season. Moth balls and a bag or two of the silica gel inside the car (which absorbs any moisture in the air) are excellent preventative measures.
Wash the vehicle
Dust and dirt are corrosive to any paint job so to ensure a longer life it’s important when storing to not leave those elements on the vehicle, but take care not to put it away wet. This can be challenging if you want to use the vehicle right up to wet or snow season. You should never put your car away wet because rust will form everywhere the water collects. You’ll want to try anticipating the weather and cleaning the car and driving it a little to dry it out before storage. Then it will be necessary to get the dust off before storing it with a wipe down with wet/damp towels followed drying it with towels. Another option is one of the “quick detailer sprays” available at many auto parts stores.
Wax car
This is recommended but it may be difficult to get in a good waxing of the car depending on the temperature when you are preparing to store it. A good quality of wax will be too difficult to apply in low temperatures.
Condition the rubber parts
Many of the brand name products for treating rubber put on greasy coatings of silicon (Silicon isn’t good for paint) or tend to build up over time and actually make the trim look worse. Use a good rubber conditioner to preserve all the trim.
Clean the wheels
Brake dust is highly corrosive and it’s not good to have it sitting on your wheels for weeks or months at a time. To do the most thorough job remove the wheels from the car, clean them on the outside and inside.
Cover Openings
Sealing up the exhaust tips will help to prevent rust inside the exhaust system. Close the heater vents and any other openings. Every 2 weeks or so, it’s probably a good idea to make a periodic inspection. Check if any leaks developed or if any mice are nesting.
Engine Storage
Spray WD 40 into cylinders
Take out spark plugs
Spray WD 40 into air intakes
Turn over the engine by hand with wrench a couple of times
Every three months repeat this (except the spark plugs which will no longer be in the engine)
To change the wheel bearing position, every three months turn wheels, or move car into different location
And for manual transmissions shift into one gear and move gear box internal around
Every six months drive the vehicle.
Starting the vehicle
There are differing views on whether starting a vehicle periodically while it is in storage is a good idea. Starting the engine puts considerable thermal stress on parts which are often in cold temperatures. The majority of engine wear occurs in the first few minutes when a car has been started because the oil is still in the oil pan and not lubricating the engine. In cold weather the engine may not get hot enough to burn off the moisture, acids, etc. the car is creating while running. This contaminates the clean oil. If you are going to store your car for a really long time then it needs to be run periodically to keep it operable.
Choosing a Car Repair Shop
When your car needs repairing, you feel as though the world has stopped. The thought of expensive repairs and the down time it causes by the break down are enough to cause huge amounts of stress and bad decision making about the car repair shop you choose. This is not something that needs to take over your life. You can choose a car repair expert with the knowledge to fix your car with as little cost to you with the right information.
Car repair shops will first want to analyze your car to see what the problem is. The is true of both traditional car repair and collision repair. The first step in the process of getting you car back on the road is finding out the cause for the break down. Some shops will charge for the diagnostic process and others will not. Choosing a car repair shop that does not charge for this step of the process does not mean they are the ones that have to fix your car. So save some money and have your car diagnosed for free rather than for pay.
The second most important tip is finding a car repair shop that specializes in the type of repair you need. If the diagnostic shows a computer error, seek out a car computer expert to take care of the problem. The trouble with conventional mechanics is that they may not understand every aspect of car repair and thus it may cost more in the long run as they run through different parts trying to get your car back up to speed.
In collision repair, if the body is all that is harmed, make sure to go to a company that offers a guarantee on service and the paint job and body work. References are always a great place to start when choosing a collision car repair shop. While body work may seem all cosmetic, not every repair will leave the car safe to drive. Some damages, especially those on the frame of the car, may render the frame unfit for driving. This needs to be taken into consideration when fixing the car. Other areas of collision repair to consider are the type of paint job the repair shop offers. A base coat, clear coat paint job with complete stripping will return the car to factory condition. Just a top coat of paint will last a year or two but will eventually peel off the undercoat of paint.
Before choosing any car repair shop, make sure to check with the Better Business Bureau both online and offline. These entities collect complaints on businesses and are a great source of information regarding the previous work done in a shop. Searching the Internet for reviews of the car repair shop will also lead you to real life people who either love the work they received or hate it. Both of which are important to you and your car.
Choosing a car repair shop for your car repair or collision repair does not have to be a life altering event. Take advantage of free diagnostic, seek out an expert in the field of repair and check up on the business before allowing them to work on your car. These are the best tips to choose a car repair shop that will leave you with a well running car that looks good and is safe on the road.

Stepfamily Holiday Survival Plan
Holidays are a time of fun, happiness, bonding beautifully with our children and stepchildren… one big happy family… like the Brady Bunch… right?
Most often these times can be filled with dread. Will the other parent mess about with the visitation schedule, will the children come back from their absent parent needing to be re programmed when they get back. Will all the clothes they went with be returned, will they have been told mistruths and been subjected to you being badmouthed. Or maybe the children you don’t like are around for even longer and your partner is consumed with their needs and you feel like a spare part … or the chief cook and bottle washer.
We long for a time of ease where the children skip happily out of the door and skip happily back in again or when we don’t experience overwhelming emotions of loss, grief, hurt or jealousy around it all.
Stepfamilies can be complex to say the least with many varying degrees of emotions involved. And at holiday time these emotions can be even more obvious.
Here is you guide to a smoother, happier stepfamily holiday.
Prepare yourself. If your children are going to be away prepare yourself for the days you will most wish they could be with you. Consider an activity for yourself and the rest of your family if your children will be with their other parent on Christmas Day or their birthday.
If you have children coming to visit that don’t usually live with you think though things that you can do to nurture yourself whilst they are there. Do you need to plan some time out with a friend, or perhaps you need to let your partner know that you plan to take a long hot bath one evening. Don’t let yourself dwell in worry and concern. Think of all the positives you can do to make their stay as happy for you as possible.
Have realistic expectations. Holidays within a stepfamily are going to be different. By accepting that and adjusting your expectations helps you get into the flow of exchanges and either time away from your children or extra time with the children. At holiday times children can be reminded that their mum and dad aren’t together anymore. These reminders can bring up emotions such as loss, guilt or anger. By remembering a stepfamily is different from a biological family you can create new traditions and rituals that are unique to your stepfamily and set aside a time when you know all will be able to participate — even if it’s before or after a particular holiday’s date. Children need to be with both of their biological parents, be sensitive to that. As children grow older, their friends become more important so they may want to spend some of their holiday time with them.
Plan what you’ll do. Before the holiday begins plan with your partner and the children what you all want to do during the holidays. Set out expectations upfront. Make everyone aware of any work commitments or agreements to visit family. By not having a plan for the holidays you are open to boredom, frustrations and arguments setting in, and that is likely to be like waling into a minefield.
Establish new traditions. It’s good to create new traditions in a stepfamily. Taking everyone’s needs into account. That way, things are fresh and new to everyone, which creates a feeling of being in the same boat as everyone else.
Consider what each family did and enjoyed before and work out what the new family would like to do now. Would you like to create a tradition of each of you having some time alone with your biological children? Maybe you want to have grandparents come and visit for a few days whilst the children are with you. Be creating and enjoy the process.
Take time for you and your partner. If you find yourself without your children whilst they visit their other parent make the most of special time alone with your partner. Your relationships is the most important thing for your children. They’ll learn how relationships should (or shouldn’t) be done by watching you. You are their main educator on that front. You’ll feel great for it too. Time to show each other just how much you do love one another and top yourselves back up before the children come back home.
If you are having time with children that don’t usually live with you it’s just as important to plan a bit of time alone. Even if it is snuggling up to watch a movie together once the children have gone to bed. It’s important to not feel like one of you is being shoved aside every time the children are about. That can build resentment for their visits.
Holiday’s are just one of the areas I work though with my clients. If you’d like more free information request your copy of my free report from my website.
Happy holidays!
